Mrs. Pearlie Mae Welch Tucker, 92, of Winterville, died on Thursday, December 29, 2022, at her home.
Mrs. Tucker was born in Comer, Oglethorpe County, on July 28, 1930, daughter of the late Zeb Welch and Vera Brown Welch, and was also preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Charlie Thomas Tucker; infant son, Tommy Wayne Tucker; and several siblings. Surviving are two daughters: Nancy Griffiths of Winterville and Deborah Boney of Jacksonville, FL; three grandchildren: Brent (Leigh) Griffiths, Braiden (Jennifer) Griffiths, and John C. Boney, III of; four great-grandchilden: Bryce (Luke) Boggs, Jayden Griffiths, Elisse Griffiths, and Emilee Pearl Griffiths; one brother, Zeb Welch, Jr. of Crawford; sister-in-law, Darleen Aiken of Hull; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
She enjoyed her work as a seamstress for many years, and will be most remembered by her work with American Veterans (AMVETS). Mrs. Tucker worked as manager of the AMVETS Bingo Center for 20+ years and was a member of the AMVETS Auxiliary. Pearl won many awards throughout the years with her AMVETS scrapbooks.
Affectionately known as “Granny” to most, her nurturing and caring personality led her to not only care for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, but for the entire community. Mrs. Tucker was an active Special Olympics volunteer for many years and enjoyed visiting the “old folks” in nursing homes. Pearl was a longtime member of the Winterville First Baptist Church.
Always one to be young at heart, she enjoyed working in her vegetable and flower gardens, and was always willing to share the fruits of her labor with others. Granny looked forward to every holiday, especially yearly Easter egg hunts and decorating her yard for Christmas. Folks came from all over to drive down Martin Cemetery Road and enjoy her Christmas lights.
Pearl was very thankful for the times that she and Charlie spent travelling, and considered herself blessed to have visited 48 of the 50 states.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2023, at 11 o’clock in the Sanctuary of the Winterville First Baptist Church with Dr. Phil Wages officiating. A reception will follow the service in the church fellowship hall. Burial will precede the service in the Winterville Cemetery.
Flowers are accepted and contributions may be made in her memory to the Winterville First Baptist Church, 305 North Church Street, Winterville, Georgia 30683 or to the Wounded Warrior Project at woundedwarriorproject.org.
