Mrs. Betty Jolly Carlton, 85, of Elberton, Georgia passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 26, 2015 at her home, surrounded by family and friends. She was born in Toccoa, Georgia on September 5, 1930 to the late Freeman Hoyt Jolly and Sue Ellen Collins Jolly. She was the beloved bride of the late George Ira Carlton, Jr., having celebrated over 29 years of marriage together prior to his passing in October of 1993. Betty was a graduate of Toccoa High School. She went on to graduate from Crawford W. Long School of Nursing in 1951 as a Registered Nurse. She also attended the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina. Betty was a public health nurse in Hart County for 35 years. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Elberton and the Lydia Sunday School Class. Left to cherish her memories are her son and daughter-in-law, Marc and Bridgette Carlton of Elberton; her daughter, Ellen Carlton of Elberton; and her brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Linda Jolly of Hartwell. She was also the proud "Mema" of two precious grandsons who meant the world to her: Christopher Carlton and his fiancée, Britney Whitaker, both of Oakwood, and Clay Carlton of Dahlonega. She was also loved by special nieces and nephews, and her faithful caregiver, Sandra Lindsey. A service to celebrate Mrs. Carlton’s life was held on Sunday, November 29, 2015 at 3:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Elberton, with Rev. Gary Purvis officiating.A time of visitation began at 2:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary.Interment followed at Elmhurst Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Tony Hover, Jimmy Harris, Alan Harris, Ray Harris, Kip Jolly, and Charles Hill.Honorary pallbearers were Paul Paramore and William Hubbard. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wheelchair Ramp Ministry at Elberton First Baptist Church, 132 Heard Street, Elberton, Georgia 30635, or to T.J. & Friends Foundation at P.O. Box 6161, Elberton, Georgia 30635. Arrangements for Mrs. Betty J. Carlton were in the care of Hicks Funeral Home of Elberton.
