Betty Jean Bobo Sayer

Mrs. Betty ‘Jean’ Bobo Sayer, 73, of Thaxton Wynne Road, Rayle, wife of 53 years to James ‘Edwin’ Sayer, Sr., entered into rest on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, at St. Mary’s Hospice House.

Mrs. Sayer was born in Washington on April 13, 1948, daughter of the late Ralph Graydon Bobo, Sr. and Sara Amanda Darracott Bobo. She was a 1966 graduate of Washington-Wilkes High School and furthered her education at North Georgia Technical College where she was certified as a licensed practical nurse. Jean later earned a cosmetology degree and worked as a licensed beautician for a period of time. Above all, her favorite occupation was being a homemaker and nanny, and devoting her time to raising her family.

She was a dedicated member of Stevens Grove Baptist Church where she was active in the Women’s Missionary Union, and always looked forward to filling Samaritan Purse shoe boxes each Christmas. Jean was proud of her memberships in the Lexington Red Hats Society, the Lexington Baptist Church Caleb Club, and the Oglethorpe County Library Book Club, all of which afforded her the opportunity to socialize with her many friends and fellow community members.

A devoted “Gammy” and “Grandma”, Jean adored her grandchildren as well as spending time with them. She will forever be remembered for love of watching the mountain leaves change colors, attending fall festivals and yard sales, and trips to the beach.

Survivors, in addition to her husband Edwin, include her children: Eddie and Traci Sayer of Suwanee, Debbie S. and Lamar Bowles of Commerce, and Ronnie Sayer of Oakwood; grandchildren: Olivia Sayer, Nathan Sayer, Ava Bowles, Joshua Bowles, and Brandi Seaman; siblings: Graydon and Patricia Bobo of Washington and Carol Jeanette B. and John Grooms of Calhoun; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her sister, Sara ‘Ann’ B. Henderson.

The family will receive friends on Monday, March 14, from 1:30-2:30p.m. in the fellowship hall at Stevens Grove Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at 3 o’clock in the church sanctuary with the Rev. Tom Dial officiating. Interment will be in the Thaxton-Wynne Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Mike Bobo, Trent Henderson, Jeff Hansford, Townley Wilson, Matt Tallent, and Brant Murry and honorary pallbearers will include Lee Thaxton, Tommy Thaxton, Harry Piper, and George Smith.

Flowers are accepted and contributions may be made in her memory to Samaritan’s Purse, PO Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607 or to Parkinson’s Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 800, Miami, FL 33131, or to the Thaxton-Wynne Cemetery Fund.
