Betty Margaret Bond Childs, a native of Elberton, Georgia, passed away on December 18, 2021. Betty was a Christian who served her Savior, Jesus Christ, faithfully her whole life and was a charter member of West End Baptist Church, where she was the Church Secretary for many years and sang in the choir. Betty was the baby of her family and grew up on the family farm with her five brothers and one sister. She worked at the Elbert County High School for the Athletic Director as the Department Administrator for many years and was known around the county as the heart of the department and a true fan of the Blue Devils. Friday nights would find her and Alvin at the football games both home and away cheering on her beloved students. She loved the kids and was never too busy to take time out of her day to sit and talk with one of the players when they popped in her office. Affectionately nicknamed Betty Boop, she loved to listen to her Bible read aloud on her tablet, do jig saw puzzles, word search puzzles and watching the Game Show Network – especially the show, America Says. Give her an egg salad sandwich dipped in ketchup with mac & cheese, a Bojangle’s steak biscuit and a chocolate chip cookie and she was a happy camper!
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Omar Bond, Sr. and Lucy Pauline Morris Bond; her husband, William Alvin Childs; and daughter, Lisa Carol Childs. She is survived by her daughter, Jan Childs Richards and husband Clay; son, Michael William Childs and wife Becky; step granddaughter, Rebekah Richards Poe and husband Zach; and two great grandchildren: Django James Poe and Karsyn Ruth Poe.
Funeral services celebrating Betty’s life will be held on Tuesday, December 21, at 11 o’clock from the graveside in Forest Hills Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the S. Mitchell Mack Hospice House of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625, 704-873-4719.
