Betty Watson Spaid

Betty Watson Spaid, 74, of Metter died Saturday, July 14, 2012 while vacationing in Alaska.   She was a graduate of Metter High School class of 1954 and received her bachelor’s degree from Georgia Teachers College in 1958. She later received a master’s degree and education specialist degree from Georgia Southern University. As a military wife she traveled and taught in many schools around the world and state including the Philippines and Valdosta. She retired from teaching in the Candler County school system where she was honored as Teacher of the Year in 1994. She was a member of the Metter United Methodist Church and the Candler County Retired Teachers Association. She served in the church choir and was a former board member of Friends of the Library. Her many achievements included publishing a book on the genealogy of the Spaid family and a book of family letters detailing the family’s experiences while living in the Philippines. Her hobbies included square dancing, traveling, knitting, genealogy, computers, reading, puzzles/games and spending time in the mountains. She was preceded in death by her parents Wallace and Ethel Coleman Watson; husband Carl Spaid; and infant son Daniel Spaid. Survivors include a son David (Pat) Spaid of Metter, formerly of Elberton; daughters Jan Rowell of Douglas and Dee (Mark) Houser of Tucker; one brother Robert L. (Thelma) Watson of Metter; grandchildren Jamie (Amy) Rowell, Jessica Spaid, and Brittany Spaid; great-grandchild Russell Rowell, and special friend Richard Rogers of Statesboro. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Metter Methodist Church or Friends of the Library. Visitation will be held on Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home, Metter chapel. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, at 11 a.m. at Metter United Methodist Church with burial following at Rosemary Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
