DEWY ROSE – Billy Ray “Bird” Scoggins, 79, died Sept. 21, 2023, at Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens, with his family by his side.
 
Born July 4, 1944, in Dewy Rose, he was a son of the late Curlyss and Irene Mann Scoggins. He attended school in Dewy Rose and Bowman. He worked at the Monroe plant in Hartwell before a career as a truck driver for Gold Kist, Rucker Trucking and Granite Panelwall. He later retired as operator of Scoggins Garage in Goss, where he specialized in working on cars, trucks and tractors and hosting a gathering of friends from the community for stories, tall tales and talks about the issues of the day. He enjoyed NASCAR and camping. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church.
 
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Marlow Scoggins; and a nephew, Terry Scoggins.
 
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Sherry Scoggins; one son and daughter-in-law, Shane and Angela Scoggins of Royston; two beloved granddaughters, Rose Scoggins of Elberton and Marlie Scoggins of Royston; a brother and sister-in-law, Glenn and Carolyn Scoggins of Madison County; two sisters-in-law, Betty Scoggins of Bowman and Linda (Larry) Dunlap of Lexington, S.C.; two brothers-in-law, Joel (Karen) Dickerson and Randy (Sandy) Dickerson of West Columbia, S.C.; three nephews, Mike Scoggins of Dewy Rose, Greg Scoggins of Madison County and Chad Scoggins of Bowman; and one niece, Tina Hart of Madison County.
 
A memorial service and reception for family and friends will be held Oct. 8, at 2:30 p.m. in the Dewy Rose Baptist Church Family Life Center.
 
The family is at the home at 2244 Bowman Highway in Dewy Rose.
 
Berry Funeral Home in Elberton is in charge of arrangements.
