Mr. John Wilton "Billy" Smith, 90, longtime resident of Elberton, husband of Betty Sue Gaines Smith, finished his course in faith on Friday, October 31, 2014. Mr. Smith was born in Oglethorpe County on December 12, 1923, to the late George Joseph Smith, Sr. and Linnie O'dell Tiller Smith. He was Baptist by faith, a retired truck driver, and a U.S. Navy Veteran. Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Betty Sue Gaines Smith of the home; two daughters and their spouses: Judy and Doyle Patterson and Debra and Charles Romine, all of Elberton; sister, Zelma Fry of Elberton; two grandchildren and their spouses: Denise and Richard Rousey of Elberton and John Kevin and Julie Patterson of Jefferson; and three great-grandchildren: Matthew Rousey, Bryse Patterson, and Bayleigh Johnson. Private crypt-side services will be held on Monday, November 3, in the Mausoleum of Forest Hills Memorial Park with the Rev. Jack McVeigh officiating. The family is at the residence of Debra and Charles Romine, 108 Forest Avenue, Elberton, and will receive friends at Berry Funeral Home from 3:00-5:00p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
