Mr. Charles Howard Hopkins, Sr., 72, of Guy Wilson Road, Rock Branch Community, Elberton, husband of 45 years to Amelia Powell Hopkins, passed away on Friday, July 26, 2019, at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.
Charles was born in Key West, FL on October 9, 1946, son of the late Truman Grice Hopkins, Sr. and Iris Elma Lance Hopkins Dyson. A 1964 graduate of Washington-Wilkes High School, he was a member of the 1963 WWHS State Championship Team, and received his Bachelor’s Degree from West Georgia College. Mr. Hopkins served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during Vietnam and was awarded a Purple Heart for his service. Charles was the owner/operator of Hopkins Grocery for 25 years and after retirement worked as a Benefits Counselor for the Georgia Department of Veteran’s Affairs. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Elberton, Rock Branch Rook Club, Elbert County Fish and Game Club, Elberton Elks Lodge, and Washington-Wilkes Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Hopkins served his community on the Elbert County Board of Commissioners and was instrumental in bringing the Rowing Center to Richard B. Russell State Park. He enjoyed playing golf, yard work, and watching the Braves and History Channel.
Survivors in addition to his wife Amelia include his children: Megan Hopkins Turner of Elberton and Charles Howard Hopkins, Jr. of Frankfurt, KY; grandson, Charles Harrison Turner of Elberton; sister, Nancy and Rick McClure of Tallahassee, FL; brother, Tad and Marcia Hopkins of Evans; half-sister, Linda Hester of Centre, AL; sister-in-law, Sally Hopkins of Washington; brother-in-law, David Powell of Elberton; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Lance Hopkins.
Memorial services celebrating his life will be held on Tuesday, July 30, at 2 o’clock in the First United Methodist Church of Elberton with the Rev. Jim McCollough officiating. A reception will follow the service at the Elberton Country Club.
The family is at the residence where they will receive friends.
In honor of Charles’s many years of supporting Washington-Wilkes Tigers, Elbert County Blue Devils, and Georgia Southern Eagles, the family request everyone attending the service to please wear blue.
