In the early morning hours of Friday, the 27th of December 2024, Charles Colquitt Mann passed away while in the comfort of “Cogburn Hall”, his residence on Lexington Highway in Elberton, Georgia. Husband of the late Frances Ward Mann, he was one month shy of his 90th birthday.
Charles was born in Lyons, Georgia on the 27th of January, 1935, the youngest child of Herman Colquitt Mann and Nora Lucile Eavenson Mann. He relished his memories of growing up in Lyons with his older brother Horace. Charles was a graduate of Lyons High School and furthered his education at the Southern College of Pharmacy in Atlanta, presently part of Mercer University.
It was in Atlanta where Charles was working in a drug store and caught the eye of Mary Frances Ward while she frequented the soda fountain. She would soon become his wife, and their journey would take them from Atlanta to Roberta and back to Atlanta before calling Elberton home in 1960.
Once settled in Elberton, Charles began work at Elberton Drug on the downtown square. He would later found the family business, Mann’s Pharmacy, which served Elbert County for over 40 years. Charles was particularly proud to have had the first drive-thru pharmacy in Elberton.
He was a member of First Methodist Church of Elberton, Philomathea Masonic Lodge #25, and the Elbert County Chapter of Ducks Unlimited. Charles was a member and past president of the Wildlife Association of Elbert County, during which time he was instrumental in supplementing the deer population of Elbert County. He and Frances were members of the Broad River Keepers Club and looked forward to hosting Shoal Lilly Parties at Graben River Farm on Broad River annually. Charles served his community and state in the Georgia House of Representatives for eight years, representing District 13-3.
An avid outdoorsman, Charles enjoyed hunting, fishing, and skeet shooting at the Elbert County Gun Club. He also enjoyed bird watching, and watching football and baseball.
He was the husband of 68 years to the late Frances Mann; the father to his children: Greg Mann of Elberton and Julie Mann of Augusta; the loving "Granddaddy” to his grandchildren: Mary Roberts of Atlanta, Will Mann of St. Simons Island, Ben Mann of Gainesville, Grace Dejean of Atlanta, Pate Mann of Atlanta, and Charlsie Mann of Atlanta and great-grandchildren: Millie Roberts, Francie Mann, Bennett Roberts, Patton Mann, Eloise Dejean, and Margot Mann. Additionally, he leaves behind his brother-in-law, Edward Phillips of Elberton; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Berry Funeral Home on Thursday, the 2nd of January, 2025, from 1:00-1:45p.m. A funeral service celebrating Mr. Mann’s life will follow at 2:00p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Tim Adams officiating. Burial will follow at Mann Family Cemetery at Graben River Farm during a private ceremony.
Flowers are greatly appreciated by the family, and those wishing may make contributions in his memory to First Methodist Church of Elberton, 132 E. Church Street, Elberton, Georgia 30635.
