Mr. David ‘Duncan’ Taylor, 92, of Taylor Road, Lexington, husband of the late Levie Nell Scott Taylor, passed away on Tuesday, February 11, 2020, at his residence.
Mr. Taylor was born in Alto on May 31, 1927, son of the late Harris Soloman Taylor and Nellie Ruemma Woodall Taylor. He entered into the U.S. Army in 1946, and was later discharged and placed in the U.S. Army Reserves, where he was in charge of food preparation, record keeping, inspecting, and was dining facility manager for other units. Mr. Taylor retired from the Army Reserves in 1989 as a Sergeant First Class, with over 25 years of service.
A hardworking man who had many careers, he once managed a furniture store, worked as a butcher, and was most commonly known as the “dry cleaning” man. Mr. Taylor worked as a life insurance agent for Southland Life, Woodmen of the World, and Carolina Life where he received many honors for top sales in the entire company.
Duncan was a dedicated Republican all of his life. He was on the Staff and Advisory Boards of Georgia Governors too numerous to name. Mr. Taylor proudly served on the Oglethorpe County Board of Commissioners from January 1, 1965 - January 1, 1973, and again from January 1, 1989 - January 1, 1999, totaling 18 years of faithful service to his county.
He was a former member of Bethesda United Methodist Church and a current member of Pentecost Chapel Congregational Holiness Church where he served as a Deacon as long as his health permitted. He loved the Lord and was often the first to arrive at church on Sundays.
Mr. Taylor enjoyed gardening, sharing what he grew, and was faithful to visit those who were shut-in.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Wayne Norman of Lexington, grandson, Brandon W. Norman of Lexington; great-grandson, Truitt W. Norman of Bethlehem; brother, William L. Taylor of Hull; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.
In addition to his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by his granddaughter, Erika L. Norman; and siblings: J.R., Oscar, Dial, Wilford, Joe, Wiley, and Edward Taylor, Dorothy Walker, Susie Smith, Henrietta Norman, and infant Margarette Kathleen Taylor.
Funeral services celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, February 15, at 1 o’clock at Pentecost Chapel Congregational Holiness Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Berry Funeral Home from 6:00-8:00p.m. on Friday, February 14.
