David Roy Speer

Mr. David Roy Speer, 67, died at his residence in Smyrna, GA on Saturday, February 11, 2023. Our hearts are broken by his sudden passing, but we take comfort in knowing that he was reunited with his wife and best friend, Karen Beth Speer, just in time to celebrate their 52nd anniversary.

David was born in Los Angeles, CA on February 24, 1955, son of the late John Douglas Speer and Patricia Ann “Pat” Van Dusen Speer. He graduated from McEachern High School in Powder Springs, GA where he met the love of his life, Karen. Upon leaving school, David enrolled in the United States Air Force after which he entered college where he was proud to be in the first graduating class at Kennesaw State College, presently known as Kennesaw State University and served as the Student Government President for a term.

David spent most of his working career in various sales positions but retired from the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier which he enjoyed immensely since it gave him an opportunity to get to know and make friends with people on his route.

He was an athlete in high school playing football, baseball, and basketball. David was a lifelong sports enthusiast and especially loved cheering on his beloved Georgia Bulldogs along with the USC Trojans.

In later years he and Karen spent their retirement days at their lake house on Lake Sinclair in Eatonton, GA.  After Karen's passing in 2020 David decided to leave Georgia and go on the road to live full time in his RV.  He traveled out west to Colorado to spend more time with his grandkids.

Left to cherish his memories are his children and their spouses: David Brent Speer and Timothy Roger Mays of Smyrna, GA and Sara Beth Oren and Andrew Charles Oren of Arvada, CO; grandchildren: Kennedy Elizabeth Oren and Ryder Jackson Oren who both brought the most joy to his life; and siblings: Cindy Bailey of Decatur, GA and Brian Speer of Commerce, GA.

Military honors for David will be rendered during a graveside service on Monday, March 6, 2023, at 3:00p.m. at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA. A Celebration of Life Gathering honoring both David and Karen will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Contact Brent Speer for details concerning the Celebration of Life.
