Donald Lloyd Carlson, born on June 29, 1935, joined the angels on March 3, 2025. Don grew up in the small North Georgia town of Elberton. His parents, deceased, are Anton William Carlson from Karlsham Sweden and Evelyn Malinda Bond Carlson from Fountain City, Wisconsin.
Don had the pleasure of growing up in a rural setting where he experienced the boyhood pleasures of hunting, trapping, fishing, riding horseback, swimming in creeks, rivers, and old rock quarries. He also learned the importance of hard work, doing farm chores and picking cotton the “old fashion way”, by hand. As a teen, he enjoyed working at the local airport where he got to fly with highly experienced WWII fighter pilots. Other jobs throughout high school included curb hop, cook, table waiter, dishwasher, service station attendant, icehouse employee and delivery boy, helper at a tombstone granite plant, and gas pipeline welder’s helper with Burnette and Lambert Construction Company.
As an adult, Don was employed by General Electric for 25 years, owned/operated the American Computer & Consulting Services Company, and subsequently worked for Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for 12 years. During his career, he contributed to three historical events. Served as a welder’s helper during the installation of the gas pipeline system in Elberton in 1952. In 1957, he was selected as a team member for the historical “Computer Application Project” at General Electric transformer manufacturing facility in Rome GA. In 1997, he was assigned to manage the FDOT “Research and Development Center” for the “Sunpass” toll collection system on the Florida Turnpike.
On September 9, 1956, he married June Bond Fowler, the love of his life. Don’s lasting legacy is his family of three sons Lee, Greg and Jeff, 10 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the Berry Funeral Home in Elberton on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at 2:00p.m. Burial will be in Elberton’s Forest Hills Memorial Park.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or to Faith Presbyterian Church in Gainesville, Florida.
