Donnie Caldwell, 68, entered into rest on Monday, June 13, 2022 at Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital, just two weeks prior to his 69th birthday. He fought a valiant battle with Agent Orange exposure from his time in Vietnam where he was a helicopter crew chief and door gunner for the Army.
Donnie was born in Elberton to the late Jack Caldwell and Sadie Saxon Caldwell Parsons. A legend in his own mind, Donnie was funny whether he meant to be or not. He was a former member of the Elberton Country Club and tried to never miss a tee time. Donnie was a southern gentleman with a slow, calming drawl who loved to work in his garden. He was a member of Elberton Christian Church and the Elberton Elks Lodge #1100.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Caldwell; and sister, Betty Thornton.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sherri Howell Caldwell of Elberton; two children, Jessica Wallis (Ja) of Elberton and Zack Caldwell (Melissa) of Cuthbert; six grandchildren, Jackson and Caroline Wallis, and Adam, Brookelyn, Alex, and Calleigh Caldwell; and sister, Lucy Caldwell Gillespie of Columbia. Last but certainly not least, he is survived by his faithful canine companion, Trixie.
The family received friends from 6-8:00 P.M. on Thursday, June 16th at Hicks Funeral Home.
A celebration of Donnie's life and service took place at 10:00 A.M. Friday, June 17th in the Chapel of Hicks Funeral Home with Pastor Kenny Martin officiating. Interment followed in Forest Hills Memorial Park.
Flowers were graciously appreciated, and donations may be directed to your favorite charity.
