Mr. Douglas Wayne Mercer of Elberton, age 81, passed away at his residence Friday, September 17, 2021 after an extended illness.
Doug was born in Elberton on April 23, 1940 to the late George Alton Mercer and Ruth Aderhold Mercer.
He met the love of his life in first grade at Centerville School and graduated from Elberton High. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ann Wansley Mercer and three children, Catherine Warren (Dave) of Richmond Hill, Jacquelyn Fogle (Sammy) of Cameron, SC, and Alton Mercer of Madison. He has six grandchildren whom he adored: Adrienne Blum (Brice), Audra Esquivel (Joaquin), Rachel Fogle, Erica Fogle, Sarah Ellen Mercer and Gaines Mercer. He is also survived by his brothers, Gerald Mercer (Peggy) and Jimmy Mercer (Mary), of Elberton. He was preceded in death by his oldest brother, George Robert Mercer.
Doug enjoyed traveling and attending activities in which his children and grandchildren took part in including football games, dance recitals and piano performances. Favorite activities included NASCAR racing and cheering for the Atlanta Falcons and Georgia Bulldogs.
Doug’s life career was in water and wastewater treatment management. He taught certification classes and retired from the City of Cumming, GA in 2001 as the Water Production Superintendent.
Arrangements are provided by Berry Funeral Home with visitation beginning at 3PM on September 19th followed by the service at 4:00. The graveside service is the following day at 10AM at Concord United Methodist Church Cemetery.
