Dr. Donald C. Maxwell, Sr.

Dr. Donald Maxwell, age 84, of Chamblee, Georgia passed away Friday, July 29, 2016 at Halcyon Hospice in Atlanta surrounded by his loving family.

The son of John Chester and Laura Maxwell, Don was born in Dewy Rose, Georgia and lived in Elberton. He was a 1950 graduate of Elbert County High and attended Newberry College on a football scholarship. After graduating from Newberry in 1954, Don joined the US Army, serving as a dental technician and also continued his love for sports by playing football for the US Army. After two years of service, Don returned to Georgia and on September 2, 1956 married the love of his life Christina (Tina) Munumer, also of Elberton.

Don entered the dental program at Emory University and graduated in June 1960. He established his dental office in the then small town of Chamblee where he practiced for 42 years and earned the reputation as the ”gentle dentist.” He was a member of the Hinman Society, the Georgia Dental Association and the Newberry Letterman’s Club. He coached Pop Warner football at Murphy Chandler Park in the 1960s and returned to help again when his grandsons played football at the same park in the late 1990s. He was a member of Advent Lutheran Church and upon its closing became a member of Lutheran Church of the Redeemer.

Don is survived by his wife of 59 years, Christina Munumer Maxwell; their three children, son Donald C. Maxwell, Jr., daughter Lisa Reagan, her husband Michael, daughter Elana Maxwell, and her “Yankee” Bob Brown; and “Poppy’s” three precious grandchildren—Ian, Kevin and Casey Reagan. He is also survived by his brother, William Maxwell of Royston, Georgia, his sisters Winnie Beaucaire (Don) of Biloxi, Mississippi and Bonnie Babcock of Houston, Texas and brother and sister-in-law Candido and Lynne Munumer of Elberton, Georgia as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Don bravely fought Parkinson’s disease for the last several years of his life. The family will be forever grateful to his loving caretakers Andrea, Kathleen, Deborah, Julia, Charletta, Delores, Donna and others who assisted with his care and well-being.
