Elaine Smith Dantzler, 85, of Winterville, GA died January 4, 2022. She was the daughter of the
late James P. and Ruby K. “Polly” Smith.
She will be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mama, and the best grandma. Most noteworthy was her love for Jehovah God and her engagement in the Christian ministry for over 75 years; she attended the Kingdom Hall of
Jehovah’s Witnesses in Winterville. She was a talented seamstress, spending her early career
in the design department of Thomas Textile, and also owned and operated the Cobbler’s Bench
shoe shop with her husband for many years. She enjoyed camping and trout fishing in the North
Georgia mountains, and she loved the beach. Many fond memories were made traveling with
her family and dear friends through the years. She loved dancing, especially with her twin sister.
She fancied listening to Chuck Berry, Marty Robbins, and Elvis Presley, and was often treated to
Bluegrass music played by her husband on the mandolin and violin. She taught her children and
grandchildren how to provide for the family by growing, canning, and freezing fruits and
vegetables. She was an excellent Southern cook, and always ready to share.
Mrs. Dantzler was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Leonard Weyman Dantzler,
85, her infant daughter, Rebecca Lynn Dantzler, and her son, Weyman Branton Dantzler, 49.
Survivors include her sisters, Evelyn S. Strickland and Eleanor S. Doster; her brothers, James
P. “Jimmy” Smith, Jr. and Benjamin J. “Johnny” Smith (Gerrie); her daughters, Deborah Edwards
(Ray) and Loraine Harrison (Jay), nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, one
great-great-grandchild, and MANY dear friends.
