Mrs. Ellen Bowman, of Elberton, passed away Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at Elbert Memorial Hospital.A native of Greenville, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late R.L. and Sue Garner Newton.Mrs. Bowman was also preceded in death by her husband, Orin E. Bowman; a son, Mickey Bowman; a granddaughter, Martha Christina “Christy” Bowman; sisters, Bobby Sue Newton and Jessie K. Hampton; brother, Gerald Thomas Newton and a daughter-in-law, Patricia Bowman.She was a member of the Welcome Wesleyan Church.Mrs. Bowman worked for many years as a winder instructor in the textile industry. Later, she achieved her certification as a nursing assistant and enjoyed working as a caregiver.One of her most rewarding endeavors was working in the kitchen at the Wesleyan Camp, where she would spend about a month in the summer. Not only was that rewarding for her but also for the campers as she dished up all that delicious food! A funeral service to celebrate Mrs. Bowman’s life was held on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Hicks Funeral Home and Cremation Services with Rev. Arnold Beard and Rev. Dan Fernandez officiating.Interment followed in the Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery with Grandsons Lee, Daniel, Blake, James, Josh, Cain and Rion serving as pallbearers.The family received friends Friday evening at the funeral home. Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Billy Joe and Marlene Newton, J.R.and Vicki Bowman, Dale Bowman, Johnny Bowman, Dean Bowman, and Michael and Tracie Bowman; twenty-six grandchildren,forty-six great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Bowman; and brothers, Roy Lee Newton and Fred Earl Newton. Arrangements for Mrs. Ellen Bowman were in the care of Hicks Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elberton.
