Mrs. Frances Childs Fortson, 94, who lived most of her life in the Fortsonia community passed away at Nancy Hart Nursing Home on Monday, February 15, 2016 surrounded by family and friends.She was the daughter of the late Thomas Banks and Texas Robinson Childs. Mrs. Fortson was known throughout the area for her wonderful tasting cakes she made.She was retired from Elberton Manufacturing where she was a seamstress.She was an active member of Fortsonia Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, George H. Fortson; brothers: R. Otis Childs, Sr., Edgar Childs, Underwood Childs, Woodrow Childs; sisters:Birdie Childs Scott, Jewell Childs Dye, Betty Childs Mauldin, and Cora Childs Craft. Survivors include four children: George B. Fortson (Martha) of Athens, Haley W. Fortson (Fe) of Elberton, Benjamin Fortson (Elaine) of Milledgeville, and Patricia F. Sandlin (Wendell) of Alabama.She also leaves behind five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren;and one sister, Winona Palmer of Elberton. Funeral services were held Thursday, February 18, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in Fortsonia Baptist Church with Rev. Al Butler and Rev. Connie Ivester officiating.Interment followed in Elmhurst Cemetery.Monty Dixon, Lamar Scott, Bob Palmer, Nick Fortson, David Craft, and Frank Fortsonserved as pallbearers.Serving as honorary pallbearers were Hubert Bell, George Remsen, Kenny Dye, Cecil Oakley, Jr. and Mickey Palmer. The family received friends Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Hicks Funeral Home & Cremation Services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fortsonia Baptist Church general fund, 2616 Washington Highway, Elberton, Georgia. Arrangements were in the care of Hicks Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
