Mrs. Freida Algood Delk, 85, beloved member of the Elberton Community and longtime owner of the Dairy Queen Brazier, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 7, 2024, at her residence. Her husband was the late Robert Major "Bobby" Delk, with whom she celebrated 60 years of marriage and loved dearly.
Born in Elberton on April 26, 1939, Freida was the middle child of John Hill “Bully” Algood and Kathleen Walton Algood. She was a proud 1957 graduate of Elberton High School where she was the co-captain, with her lifelong friend, Mary Alice Smith Bennett, of the Girls’ Varsity Basketball team. Her love of the sport carried into adulthood, and she often could be found playing on her court at home, especially when her granddaughters were in town.
Freida served as Business Manager of the Eidolon staff during her senior year of high school. This was just a glimpse into her future as she would become one of the most well respected and successful business women in the Elberton Community. Following a brief stint at Coggins Granite Company, Freida followed in her aunt’s footsteps and entered food service. Her family served generations of Elbertonians at the Dairy Queen Brazier. She employed many of Elbert County citizens at the Brazier, instilling in them her belief of working hard and having fun. Although she was always hard at work, she was never too busy to stop and speak to her beloved customers and ask about their family members.
In her free time, she enjoyed spending time at the family home on Clarks Hill Lake where she enjoyed waterskiing with Bobby as the boat captain. When not lounging by the pool at home, she could often be found cruising on her golf cart to visit friends and neighbors on Sunset Drive. Freida was a member of Francis Asbury Methodist Church and loved her church family. Both Freida and Bobby were heavily involved in community service including Camp Harmony and Salvation Army. Hers will be a legacy of love and compassion, and her smile, signature red lipstick and golden hoop earrings, hugs, and kind words for everyone will be remembered forever.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Mitchell and Amanda Delk of Washington, D.C.; granddaughters: Sayer Delk of Los Angeles, CA and Rosie Delk of New York, NY; niece, Cindy Allgood of Elberton; and brother-in-law, Allen Black of Elberton.
Along with her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her infant son, Robert Keith Delk; brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Clara Mae Allgood; sister, Carolyn Black; and nieces and nephews: Pam Dickerson, Debbie Smith, Jason Black, and Brian Allgood.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 12, from 10:15-10:45a.m. at Berry Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 11:00a.m. in the funeral home chapel with her pastor and friend, the Rev. Tim Savelle officiating. Burial will be beside Bobby in Forest Hills Memorial Park.
Flowers are accepted and contributions may be made in her memory to Francis Asbury Methodist Church, 1016 Ruckersville Road, Elberton, GA 30635.
