Gail Doolittle Lewellen (85), passed from this life on March 24, 2020 at Birmingham, AL. Gail was born in Tifton, Georgia on October 31, 1934, the only child of the late Eunice Clark Doolittle and William Lawrence Doolittle. She grew up in Elberton, Georgia, graduated from Elbert County High School and attended Shorter College in Rome, Georgia. She was married to Dick Bland Lewellen, Jr and lived mostly in Rome, Georgia and Illinois during her marriage. She was employed for much of her life as an administrative assistant in such service-oriented settings as hospitals and Christian organizations in Georgia and Indiana. Gail studied piano during her school years and grew up playing the piano in church and singing in the choir. In her later years, she enjoyed singing in senior adult choirs and participating in senior adult activities. After retirement, Gail relocated to Valdosta, Georgia where her love of music led her to become a member of Strummers Act II, a ukulele and vocal group that performed at assisted living facilities and other events throughout the area. She was a member of the JOY Bible study class at Crossroads Baptist Church where she participated in the Intercessory Prayer Ministry. In September, 2010, Gail Moved to Birmingham, Alabama to be near her daughter and family. Mrs. Lewellen is survived by four children and their respective spouses; Melanie and Gregory Owens of Elizabeth City, NC, Sharon Hoogerman of Hertford, NC, Lauren and Nathan Brewer of Birmingham, Alabama, and Dick and Wendy Lewellen of Valdosta, GA; eight grandchildren; Mistie Owens Osterhouse (Chris), Erin Owens Almquist, Bethany Owens King (Chris), Alicia Owens, Christopher Price (Brittany), Sarah Price Falenski (Chris), Morgan Lewellen, and Jarad Lewellen, and thirteen great grandchildren: Jessica, Christina, Katherine, Stephanie, and Ezra Osterhouse, Madison and Josalyn Almquist, Arya, Tahlia, and Leila King, Emiliy and Luca Price, and Savanna Falenski. The family had a private service on March 27th at Johns-Ridouts Funeral Parlor. A graveside service will be held Saturday, June 13th at 11:00am in Forest Hills Memorial Park in Elberton, Georgia for the family. Local arrangements for Mrs. Lewellen are in the care of Hicks Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
