Garrett E. Mathews

Ed Garrett Mathews, age 90, of Elberton, GA, passed away Sunday, January 19, 2014 at his home in Elberton. Garrett was born July 19, 1923 in Jackson County, NC. He is the son of the late Duff and the late Elma (Phillips) Mathews. Garrett was a member of the Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Elberton. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Bailey McCall Mathews of Elberton; four sons, Chris Mathews of Canton, Clark Mathews of New Mexico, Mac Mathews of Nevada and David Mathews of Tuckasegee; four daughters, Rita Fritz of Eureka, CA, Rhonda Johnson of Meridian, ID, Anita Logan of Jasper, GA and Adrianne Ruege of Washington; two brothers, Grover Mathews of Tennessee and Clint Mathews of Sylva; and two sisters; Lydia Mathews of Sylva and Mazil Bently of West Wood, CA. Garrett is also survived by several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Garrett is preceded in death by two sons, Daniel and Harlan Mathews; one brother, Neylond Mathews, and one sister, Dimetene Howard. The funeral will be held 2:00 pm on Thursday, January 23, 2014 in the Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Services with Rev. Larry Perry officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fairview Gardens. Pallbearers will be Joseph Owen, Stacy Collins, Shawn O'Dear, Jeff Wall, Allen Rathbone and Michael Metcalf. Appalachian Funeral Services, Sylva, NC is in charge of arrangements.
