George Marshall Carroll

George Marshall Carroll of Elberton died peacefully on December 15, 2024.

He was born on December 26, 1937, in Red Hill, Franklin County Georgia, the only son of the late Holman Preston and Ruth Bryant Carroll. He lived most of his adult life in Norcross, GA until moving to Elberton, GA in 2002. In 1959, he met the love of his live, Vera Mills in Norcross, and they were married for 64 years. They had one son, Gerry, who has been the center of their lives.

George served our country in the United States Navy for 4 years. He began his professional career with Western Electric and worked 30 years in the telephone industry before retiring from AT&T.

George was an avid gardener, fisherman, and handyman. There was little that George could not do. His vegetable gardens flourished every year much to the delight of family and friends who reaped the benefits. He was a long-time member of the Elbert County Fish and Game Club and served as the vice-president for 10 years. He was also an active member of Bethel E. Baptist church.

George never met a stranger, and could carry on a conversation with anyone. He was quick with a joke or advice, whether solicited or not, and always had an answer for every question.

George was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Bonnie McFarland, Betty Williams, and Linda Kelly. He is survived by his wife Vera; son Gerry Marshall Carroll and his wife Lori; honorary grandchildren Madison and Zachary and their parents Ed and Leisa Lucas. He also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews that he loved dearly.

Funeral services for George will be held at Berry Funeral Home in Elberton, GA on Thursday, December 19 with Rev. Scott Mize and Rev. Jacky Newton officiating. Visitation will be at 1:00 and funeral service at 2:00 with interment to follow at Forest Hills Memorial Park in Elberton. Military honors will be rendered by the U.S. Navy.
