George Lawrence Herndon

George Lawrence Herndon, 93, U.S. Navy, (Ret.), veteran of World War II and The Korean War, peacefully went home to be with his Lord and Savior on December 1, 2014. George was born in Bowman Georgia on Oct. 4,1921, where he attended school and helped manage the family farm. At 17, he left home to work with the Civilian Conservation Core in Oregon to help support his younger brother, sister, and his father. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1941, and served mainly in The European Theater and Greenland. He served in the Navy for 20 years until his retirement as Master Chief. George married his childhood sweetheart and the love of his life, Rebecca Carithers, on July 3 1945. They enjoyed a long and wonderful life together. They were members of Smyrna First Methodist Church for over 50 years. George was dedicated to his Heavenly Father, his family, our country and his friends throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 68 years, Rebecca Carithers Herndon, and his oldest son, Michael Claude Herndon of Hartwell Ga. He is survived by his son, Stephen; seven grandchildren: Leslie Stone, Ashley Cline, Jason Herndon, Adrian Herndon, Rosemary Eutsler, Natalie Herndon, and Annalese Herndon, and 10 great-grandchildren. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, December 6, at 11:00 am in a graveside service with full military honors at Hillcrest Cemetery, Bowman Ga.
