Gladys Thomas Smith

Mrs. Gladys Ray Thomas Smith, 95, of Loyd Smith Road, Lexington, wife of 59 years to the late Clarence ‘Lloyd’ Smith, passed away at her residence on Sunday, November 20, 2022, in the presence of her family.


Mrs. Smith was born in the Palmetto-Point Peter Community of Oglethorpe County on September 19, 1927, daughter of the late Edgar Lee Thomas and Lucy Caldwell Thomas. She graduated from Meson Academy (which became Oglethorpe County High) and worked for Southern Bell Telephone Company. Following the birth of her first child, Gladys became a full time homemaker. Mrs. & Mrs. Smith were among the founding members of Elberton Christian Church, and worshipped faithfully there as long as their health permitted. She enjoyed watching television, especially the Game Show Network and Fox News.


Survivors include her children: Dennis and Bonnie Smith of Thomson, Leslie and Fe Smith of Lexington, and Lee Ann Smith; grandchildren: Eric and April Smith, Stevie Neiznay, and Danielle Neiznay; two great-grandchildren with one on the way; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.


In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by her siblings: Geraldine Argo, Edna Moon, and Lowell Thomas.


Funeral services celebrating her life will be held on Tuesday, November 22, at 1 o’clock in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with the Rev. Rick Cox officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memorial Park.


The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 12:00-12:45p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.


Flowers are accepted and contributions may be made in her memory to Elberton Christian Church, 1128 Calhoun Falls Highway, Elberton, GA 30635.
