Harold Grey Wheeler, 87, of Elberton, GA,husband of 57 years to Jane Clark Wheeler, passed awayJuly 17, 2019. Mr. Wheeler was born in Taliaferro County, Georgia on April 19, 1932, son of the late Harold King Wheeler and Dora Stewart Wheeler. He was a graduate of Taliaferro County High School and a U.S Air Force Veteran where he served honorably as an Aircraft Mechanic working primarily on B25 bombers. He was a life-long learner and reader with a broad spectrum of interests and diligently learned all he could, pursuing his interests with excellence. He was a member of the Masons. He worked as a communication technician for AT&T for over 34 years. After retiring from AT&T he took courses at the University of Georgia and earned a degree from Athens Tech. Being outdoors working in his garden was a favorite hobby of his and he always had an abundant crop of summer vegetables. He was also an avid woodworker. Mr. Wheeler was often a man of few words but his mind was always active. He was a long time member of Margaret’s Grove Baptist Church where he enjoyed fellowshipping with the congregation. In addition to his wife, Mr. Wheeler is survived by a daughter and her husband, Dorita Wheeler Deierlein (Eric) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; son and his wife, Christopher Robert Wheeler (Paige) of Athens, GA; five grandchildren, Tiffany Deierlein Chamberlain (Joshua) of Turlock, CA, Eric Christian Deierlein II (Marianne) of Charleston, SC, Greyson, Emma Grace, and Addison Wheeler of Athens, GA; and two great grandchildren, Jeremiah and Edmund Chamberlain of Turlock, CA. He was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Gwendolyn and Harold Jones. Pallbearers were Larry Veazey, Paul Jackson, Stan Jackson, Nick Yarid, Grant Grantham, and Leroy Carroll. The family considered all family and friends honorary pallbearers and were thankful for the many ways they have assisted and blessed them. A celebration of Mr. Wheeler's life was held on Monday, July 22, 2019, at 11 AM at Margaret’s Grove Baptist Church in Crawfordville. Interment followed in the church cemetery with Military Honors. A time of visitationbegan in the church at 10 AM just prior to the service. In lieu of flowers the family is asking that donations be made to Margaret’s Grove Baptist Church, 2232 Jordan Place Road.
