Mrs. Hilda Edith Johnson Fleming, 82, of Middleton Church Road, Elberton, passed away on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at her residence. Although unexpected, Hilda’s death was in the manner in which she would have wanted - peacefully, pain free, and while asleep next to the love of her life.
Born in the Rice Town Community of Elberton on November 21, 1940, Hilda was the sixth of eight children born to Rev. Herbert A. Johnson and Molly Kathleen Evans Johnson. She was a 1957 graduate of Nancy Hart High School.
On December 23, 1957, she married John Lawrence Fleming and moved with him to Pensacola, FL where he was stationed in the US Navy. Two years later, they moved back to Elbert County and settled in the Heardmont Community where she lived the remainder of her life. She was a seamstress having retired from Elberton Manufacturing Company and a member of Middleton United Methodist Church.
In her spare time, she enjoyed reading and devoting herself to her family. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy, and “Granny” was always willing to fix their favorite meal anytime they asked.
Survivors include her husband of 65 years, John Lawrence Fleming of the residence; children and their spouses: Rhonda and Mitch Williams and Barry and Dolores Fleming, all of Elberton; grandchildren: Kristopher and Lindsey Williams, Craig and Jessie Fleming, Kyle and Katelin Williams, and Alan Fleming; great-grandchildren: Lane Fleming, Logan Williams, Maci Fleming, Hayden Williams, Rhett Williams, and Maddie Williams; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brothers: Lloyd, Charles, Billy, Doug, Vernon, and Neal Johnson; and sister, Libby Partain.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 4, from 6:00-8:00p.m. at Berry Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the residence. Hilda was adamant that she did not want a formal funeral service, and the family is honoring her request. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park at a a later date.
Flowers are accepted and contributions may be made in her memory to the children’s hospital of your choice.
Those wishing may sign the online guestbook at www.berryfh.com.
