Hilda "Mimi" Hampton

Hilda Clyde English Hampton, known to her family as “Mimi,” passed away on August 5th, at the age of 88 years, in Elberton, Georgia. Born in Winter Haven, Florida, Hilda, along with her husband, Brandon attorney Douglas W. Hampton (d. 2005), raised their four children in Brandon, Florida.She was an active community member, serving as President of the Parent-Teacher-Student Association at Brandon Senior High School where her children attended; served on the state textbook selection committee; was Altar Guild President at First Methodist Church in Brandon, FL; served as Women’s Service League President; was active in The American Cancer Society; and also served two terms as the honorary Mayor of Brandon. Hilda and Doug spent the early years of their marriage in Japan (Beppu and Shimonoseki) where she became an avid collector of Japanese blue and white pottery and developed a conversational knowledge of Japanese. Hilda was an avid reader; an expert in the needle arts of knitting, crochet, and embroidery, and regularly provided baby blankets to underserved mothers of newborns. She was a wonderful seamstress and an award-winning master gardener. She is remembered for her upbeat and vivacious personality, a love for travel, her sense of adventure (zip-lining was on her bucket list) and fondness for anything chocolate. She is survived by her four children, Melissa Hampton (spouse Dr. David Lambeth), DeAnne Hampton, Chris Hampton (spouse Kim née La Fon) and Amy Hampton McCollough (spouse Rev. Jim McCollough). She has seven grandchildren: Caycee Hampton, Esq. (spouse, Dr. Kyle Tumbleston), Kyndle Hampton Voskuil (spouse Aaron Voskuil), Hunter Hampton, Jamy McCollough Teasley (spouse, Nick Teasley), Ali McCollough Sudderth (spouse Matthew Sudderth), Jean-Ann McCollough, and Amanda McCollough. She has two great-grandsons: Anders Hampton Voskuil and Pierce Hampton Tumbleston. A memorial service to celebrate Mrs. Hampton’s life was held on Sunday, August 12, 2018 at First United Methodist Church, Elberton. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to The Lydia Project, providing free services to women facing cancer anywhere in the world. The address is 1369 Interstate Parkway, Augusta, Ga. 30909. Arrangements for Mrs. Hilda “Mimi” Hampton were in the care of Hicks Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Elberton.
