Mr. Hugh Gordon Brooks, Jr (Gordon) died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, March 16th losing his battle with Primary Progressive Aphasia. He was 65 years old.
He attended university at Georgia Southwestern and Masters of Arts & Teaching at UGA. He taught High School Literature, drama, AP Lit, communications. He was devoted to his students, and spent countless hours as a literary coach. He impacted the lives of many of his high school students. He was a mentor, a mensch, and brought a funny touch to engage his students through humor and kindness. Always a student of the theatre arts he brought many characters to light for those around him. And he was a “good looking man”, as he liked to say. A quintessential family man, he was a devoted father to Saxon and Kaila, and loving husband to Cathryn.
He grew up in Cordele, Georgia surrounded by family, brother, and cousins with the Baptist church as a big part of their life. He ventured out of the South once, moving briefly to Washington DC (which is still technically in the south), and fell head over heels in love with his wife. Wooing her to move back to Georgia they returned to Georgia, remaining there for the rest of his life, first in Cordele and then in Athens. A southern gentleman through and through.
He was survived by his wife, Cathryn, son Saxon, daughter Kaila, grandson Driver, brother Caroll Lynn, and legions of adoring students.
In lieu of flowers please make a donation in his memory to Athens Area Humane Society.
