Hugh Veal, Jr.

June 7, 1954 — June 6, 2017

Hugh Veal, Jr.

Mr. Harry Hugh Veal, Jr., of Charleston, SC finished his course in faith on Tuesday, June 6, 2017, just one day prior to his 63rd birthday.

A native of Elberton, GA, Hugh was a son of the late Harry Hugh Veal, Sr. and the late Jackie Edwards Terlaje. He was a 1972 graduate of Elbert County High School. Following high school, he began serving his country in the U.S. Marine Corp and later joined the U.S. Navy where he retired. While in service, he spent time in the Bahamas, Bolivia, Florida, Chicago, and Seattle to name a few. After retirement, he earned an accounting degree from Central Washington University. Hugh worked for a variety of companies in the banking and financial industry including Evergreen Bank, Pemco, Puget Sound Energy, and Daimler Chrysler Mercedes. He was also a self-employed Insurance and financial agent.

Hugh had many hobbies including sailing, hiking, reading, cooking/baking, building/fixing, and learning. You could often find Hugh in a book, educating himself and always trying to be better. He loved to open his mind to learning and his heart to those around him.

Hugh's love for water and sailing led him to buy and live aboard "Oriana", his 45' sail boat. He loved taking people out and to share in his affection for sailing.

His love for God, his family and his country were the backbone of all he stood for. There was nothing he wouldn't do for any one of those.

Hugh leaves behind his wife of nearly 11 years, Laura Grace Maxwell Veal; his daughter, Emily Seremeta, her husband Steve, and their children Ford Michael and Olive Jewette; his son, Harry Hugh Veal, III, his wife Mandy, and their children Caiden Michael, Landon Hugh, Elliotte Grace, and Hadley Hope; his sister, Debbie Veal Christian; his step-daughter, Petrea Adams, her husband Tim, and their children Rachel and Will; his step-daughter, Lacie Brown and her children Aleigh and Colsen; his step-son, Jake Brown; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, David Grady Veal.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, June 8, 2017, from 5:30-7:00p.m. at the James McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston, SC 29407.

An additional visitation will be held on Saturday, June 10, 2017, from 1:00-2:30p.m. at Berry Funeral Home, 1 Berry Lane, Elberton, GA 30635.

Interment will follow in the Veal family lot at Elberton's Historic Elmhurst Cemetery. The U.S. Navy will render graveside military rites.
