Mrs. Ida Mae Johnson Thornton, 86, of Fortson Circle, Elberton, wife of Zora Thornton, Jr., passed away on Monday, October 14, 2019, at PruittHealth at Spring Valley.
Mrs. Thornton was born in Elbert County on August 8, 1933, daughter of the late Hoke Thomas Johnson and Lola Mae Willingham Johnson. She was a homemaker and a member of Fortson Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Zora Thornton, Jr; children: Bessie and Kevin Gartrell, Donald and Beverly Hill, and Mary and Lonnie Saddler, all of Elberton, Willie Hill of Seattle, WA, and Calvin Hill of Augusta; step-daughter, Angela White; sisters: Shirley Davis of Elberton, Genell Mattox, Mamie Fairley, and Iris Browning, all of Atlanta; sister-in-law, Beverly and Saul Gaines of Elberton; brothers-in-law: Eddie and Betty Thornton of Bowersville, Clarence and Arizona Thornton of Elberton, William and Shelby Thornton of Elberton, and Scottie Thornton of Elberton; eight grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her son, Hoke Hill; grandson, Bryant Keith Hill; sisters: Pauline Welch, Worthee Lee Rucker, and Pinkey Coleman; and eight brothers.
Funeral services celebrating her life will be held on Friday, October 18, at 11 o’clock in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Lincoln Heights Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
The family is at the home of Donald and Beverly Hill on Parker Street and at the home of Shirley Davis on Campbell Street, both in Elberton.
