Jack Anthony "Tony" Hanks

Tony Hanks, 66, died peacefully Saturday, January 28, 2023, at Atrium Medical Center in Charlotte, NC.  He was surrounded by his loved ones.

Born August 29, 1956, in Elberton, GA, Tony was the son of the late Dr. Jack B. and Hilda Hanks.  He was a top student in his high school class and played trombone in the Blue Devil marching band.

He graduated from the University of GA and attended UGA’s law school before embarking on a new direction in construction as an electrician and laborer.  For 20 years, Tony worked on construction projects in Atlanta, Athens, Wilmington, Baldhead, and Nashville.

For decades, Tony lived in Charlotte where he became “part of the family”- participating in his three nephew’s events from childhood to graduations to marriages.  He was a fixture in the Sterling Road neighborhood where his endearing, friendly, and peaceful presence was known by many.  Tony was dutiful in taking care of family pets - Penny, Marlowe, and Pippa.  And he never met a stranger on Sterling and Maryland roads and could seemingly talk to anyone about anything. 

Tony was a member of Myers Park Baptist Church where he had been an usher and a member of the 5^th Dimension Sunday School class.  As a voracious reader of the news with an ecumenical spirit, he particularly enjoyed challenging discussion about world events.  Watching a football game with Tony was an experience to enjoy with his deep knowledge of player and coach histories, scandals, conflicts, and predictions.

He is survived by his brother, David Maxwell Hanks, sister-in-law, Belinda Ann Butler, nephews Winston, Jack, and Luke Hanks, Uncle Donald Ashley Medders, Aunt Judy Marian Smith, and numerous cousins in GA.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at 10 AM on Monday, February 6, 2023, at Myers Park Baptist Church.  Dr. JJ Flag will officiate.  The family will receive friends at the church following the service.

A Graveside service will also be held Monday, February 6, 2023 at 3:30 p.m. at Elmhurst Cemetery under the care of Hicks Funeral Home.  Reverend Gary Purvis will officiate.  

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sunshine Fund, Myers Park Baptist Church, 1900 Queens Road, Charlotte NC 28207-2582.
