James Henry Moore

James Henry Moore of Athens, GA passed peacefully Thursday, September 30, 2021, with his family at his side including his loving wife of 72 years, Julie Davis Moore.

James Moore, son of the late LL Moore and Pearle Scarboro, was born in Moultrie, GA on February 9, 1926. He attended The Citadel in Charleston, SC until he turned 18, then he joined the US Navy serving as a gunner and radar operator during WWII assigned to torpedo squadron VT-75. After the war, he attended the University of Georgia, graduating with honors in 1949 where he was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Beta Gamma Sigma honor societies and Vice President of Kappa Sigma fraternity. James worked for Lockheed Aircraft in Marietta, GA as Manager of Advanced Aircraft Sales. In 1971, they moved to Athens, GA after purchasing Magnolia Oil Company.

After moving to Athens, James was instrumental in the organization of Athens Bank and Trust. An avid golfer, James was a longtime member of Marietta and Athens Country Club. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Athens and the Gridiron Society. Later in life, after retiring to Elberton, GA, he served as an Elder of the Elberton Presbyterian Church. James was an articulate and intelligent man who never lost his enthusiasm for reading and writing. Some of our favorite writings were his poems to Julie which left everyone in laughter or tears, sometimes both. Most importantly, he was a man of honor and integrity, who loved being with his family more than anything.

He will always be remembered by his grandchildren and great grandchildren for his exceptional story telling. Some stories were true, others were made up, but without a doubt, he always challenged you to think. James positively impacted many lives and will be dearly missed but remembered for the love he brought to his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Julie Davis Moore of Athens, GA, his two daughters Lee Lyons (husband Bill) of Athens, GA and Barbara Uhlig (husband Ken)of Salem, SC, his four grandchildren, Robert Lyons, Natalie Lyons Hartman, Molly Uhlig Avrin, Davis Uhlig and four great grandchildren.

There will be a private family celebration of James' life.
