Jessie Evelyn Seymour Mathews died January 4, 2013 at the age of 92 in Savannah, Georgia of complications related to pneumonia. She was born in Comer, Georgia on August 29, 1920 and was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years Robert C. Mathews She spent most of her life in Smyrna, Georgia where she worked in retail sales and was a member of First Baptist Church. She enjoyed crocheting, homemaking and arts and crafts, but her passion was fishing. After retirement, they spent their summers camping and fishing at Lake Lanier with friends and their grandchildren. They traveled with friends, but especially enjoyed time spent in Panama City Beach. There they built a house with the help of friends and family and had many happy times fishing, scalloping and crabbing. She always enjoyed entertaining family and friends. Fish fries were their specialty and always included her special hush puppy recipe. The last few years she was the primary caregiver for her husband during his lengthy illness. In August of 2010 they celebrated their 90th birthdays with a party in Panama City Beach attended by many friends and family. She is survived by her son, Terry and daughter-in-law Gail; her sister-in-law Clara Seymour and family; her brother-in-law Wallace and sister-in-law Rubynell Mathews and family; her granddaughter Alisa and husband Jeff and great-grandchildren Emma, Anna, Isabella, Josiah, Gabriella, Margaret, John and Olivia; granddaughter Amy and husband Chris and great-grandsons Ethan and Andrew; granddaughter Samantha and husband Jonathan and great-grandson Edwin. Funeral services for Mrs. Mathews were held Monday, January 7, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. from the Chapel of Hicks Funeral Home with Reverend Jeff Seymour officiating. Jeff is the nephew of Mrs. Mathews.Interment followed at Forest Hills Memorial Park. A time of visitation was held Sunday, January 6, 2013 at Hicks Funeral Home from6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Arrangements for Mrs. Evelyn S. Mathews are in the care of Hicks Funeral Home of Elberton.
