Joe Smith, 79, of 2456 Jaudon Road, Elberton, husband of Mary Ann Dean Smith, passed away Monday afternoon, October 10, 2011, at his residence. Born in Elbert County, July 4, 1932, to the late Charlie H. Smith and Nobie Gunter Smith. He was a member of Northside Baptist Church where he served as a past Deacon, was a Boys Youth Leader and Youth Basketball Coach. He worked his entire life in the granite industry, but Joe's love and passion was his family and being a family man. Left to cherish his memories are his wife of the home, Mary Ann Dean Smith; his children, Randy and Peggy Smith of Elberton, GA, and Cathy S. and Keith Holloman of Hartwell, GA.; his sister, Joyce "Kitty" Smith Cheek of Winder, GA; brother, Lewis Smith of Elberton, GA; grandchildren, Jake and Chrissy Smith, Brooke Holloman, and Megan Holloman; great-grandchildren, Ava Blakey, Tucker Smith, and Max Smith; a special sister and brother-in-law Mildred and Norris Mattox; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, L.H. Smith, J.A. Smith, Alton Smith, Maurice Smith, Curtis Smith, Herman Smith, Wesley Smith, Edna Tipaldos, and Elma Crowley. A Celebration of his life will be held Wednesday, October 12, at 4PM at Northside Baptist Church with Rev. David McConnell officiating. Entombment will follow at Forest Hills Memorial Park with Marvin Blackwell, Joe Leard, Bob Thomas, G.F. Massey, Gary Dixon, Ray Cannon, Bill Berzett, and Cecil Bond serving as pallbearers and the Deacons of Northside Baptist Church and Members of the Willing Ambassadors Sunday School Class serving as honorary pallbearers. The family is at the home, 2456 Jaudon Road, Elberton, and will receive friends from 6-8PM Tuesday night at Berry Funeral Home. The family respectfully requests in lieu of flowers to make memorials in his honor to the Northside Baptist Church Sanctuary Fund, 384 North Oliver Street, Elberton, GA 30635.
