John Algis Mazeika, Sr.

Mr. John Algis Mazeika, Sr., 82, of Colbert, died Sunday, November 13, 2022, at his residence.


John was born in Kaunas, Lithuania on May 7, 1940. In 1944, during war time, his parents Vytautas (Vic) Mazeika and Stase Mazeika escaped into Germany with very few belongings and two small boys, John age 4 and his younger brother Tony age 2. The family later immigrated to Chicago, Illinois when John was the age of 9.


Following high school graduation, he served his country in the United States Air Force and furthered his education at West Coast University in California where he obtained a Bachelors Degree in Electric Engineering. He married his first wife, Mary Burgus in 1960 and became a father to his son John, Jr and daughter Christina (Tina). John studied the Bible and was baptized as a Jehovah’s Witness in 1972. He enjoyed the ministry and served as an elder in different congregations. In 1982, John and Mary moved from Whittier, California to Colbert, Georgia.


John Mazeika did course work at the University of Georgia towards his Masters Degree. And taught Electrical Engineering at Athens Tech in Athens, Georgia. Mary, his wife passed in 1986. John married his second wife, Deborah in 1987. He worked several years in the family owned business, Das Fenster German Magazine. He enjoyed wood working and listening to jazz music. He was a member of Athens Central Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He endured an 8 month terminal illness and passed quietly, under Home Hospice Care with Deborah by his side.


He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Deborah Scott Mazeika; children: John Mazeika, Jr. and his wife Cathie of Bowling Green, KY and Christina (Tina) Visagie and her husband Anton of Dana Point, CA; brothers: George Mazeika of Yachats, OR and Alex Mazeika of Athens; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous other relatives.


In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Tony.
