John Edgar "Johnny" Caldwell

Mr. John Edgar Caldwell, affectionately known as “Johnny”, 78, of Bridges Road, Carlton, husband of 55 years to the late Martha Anne Mathews Caldwell, passed away on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at his residence.

Born in Athens on March 3, 1946, Johnny was a son of the late Alfred Henry “AH” Caldwell and Annie Laurie Willoughby Caldwell. He was a 1964 graduate of Oglethorpe County High School and a lifelong member of Bethany Baptist Church. Johnny worked as a logger most of his life, having owned and operated Caldwell Logging. He is well remembered from his time operating the historic Tom’s Place, a staple store in the Veribest Community. Johnny was an avid hunter, with a special love of dove and rabbit hunting. He never met a stranger, enjoyed socializing with others, and could often be found playing poker with his buddies. 

Surviving are his sons: Kemuel Bertram Caldwell and his wife Lara, John Cameron Caldwell, and Gregory Blaine Caldwell and his wife Susan, all of Carlton; grandchildren: Blake and Phaelon Caldwell, Bailey Caldwell, Dorianne Caldwell, Blaise Caldwell, and Caden Caldwell; great-grandchildren: Tristin Caldwell, Maddie Caldwell, and Olivia Caldwell; brother, Bobby Caldwell of Tignall; sisters-in-law: Beverly Caldwell and Jackie Caldwell; brothers-in-law: Bob Herndon and Doug Mathews; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. 

Along with his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings: Alfred Virgil Caldwell, William Larry Caldwell, and Mary Elizabeth Herndon; sisters-in-law, Tricia Cofer Mathews and Sara Wilson Caldwell. 

Memorial services celebrating Johnny’s life will be conducted on Sunday, August 4, at 3:00p.m. at Vesta Baptist Church. The family will greet friends immediately following the service. 

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105
