John Shannon Owen, Jr.

Mr. John Shannon Owen, Jr., 86, of Owens Road, Elberton, husband of 67 years to Lula Belle Rucker Owen, passed away on Wednesday, January 13, 2021, at UF Health Sands Hospital in Gainesville, FL.

Mr. Owen was born in Elbert County on February 17, 1934, son of the late John Shannon Owen, Sr. and Iva Drucilla McGee Owen. He served his country in the U.S. Army National Guard and was a member of Lake Russell Baptist Church. John was a self-employed farmer and saw mill operator.

Survivors include his wife, Lula Belle; children: Sammy Joe Owen of Elberton, Wanda Hagood and Billy Mitchell of Elberton, and John S. Owen, III and Renee’ of Washington; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son-in-law, Eugene Hagood; and siblings: Ima Nell Hufstetler, Geneva Blum, and George Owen.

Funeral services celebrating his life will be held on Wednesday, January 20, at 3 o’clock in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Falling Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family is at the residence and will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
