Johnny Howard Hughes

Mr. Johnny Howard Hughes, affectionately known as “Bo” and “Sonny”, passed away on Christmas Day, 2023, at Brown Health & Rehab at the age of 74. 

Born in Elberton on December 13, 1949, he was a son of the late John Henry Hughes and Alice Sue Allen Hughes. He joined Oak Grove Baptist Church at an early age and was educated in the Elbert County School System. He was retired from Walker Granite Company and an avid fisherman. Always the life of the party, he enjoyed cutting up and having a good time. 

Surviving are his children: Calvin Hughes of Elberton, Catina and Calvin Sanders of Elberton, Keith and Dianne Hughes of Athens, Connie Hughes of Elberton, Yolanda Hughes of Royston, and Tierra Hughes of Royston; siblings: Phyllis Lewis of Elberton, Donnie and Patricia Hughes of Elberton, and Ronnie and Shirley Hughes of Elberton; sister-in-law, Adele Hughes of Elberton; brother-in-law, Frank Williams of Lavonia; aunts: Evelina Alexander of Kansas City, MO and Willera Allen of Elberton; twelve grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. 

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings: Bobbie Sue Allen, Willie James Hughes, Walter Lewis Hughes, Ophelia Williams, Phillip Hughes, and Eugene Hughes; and two grandchildren.

Mr. Hughes will lie in state on Friday, December 29, from 9:00a.m.-5:00p.m. at Berry Funeral Home. 

Funeral services celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, December 30, at 2:00p.m. in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home.
