Karen Beth Mcfarland Speer

Mrs. Karen Beth Speer, 66, wife of 49 years to David Roy Speer, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 8, 2020, at her residence in Sharpsburg surrounded by her family.

Born in Atlanta on February 9, 1954, Karen was the daughter of the late James Henry McFarland and Elizabeth Sara Cole McFarland. She attended McEachern High School in Powder Springs, GA where she was a member of the Drill Team.  This is where she met the love of her life David. Karen spent her entire career in the insurance industry having worked at Cigna for at least 4 years and at The Hartford Insurance Company for more than 24 years where she retired as a Team Leader.  She was a mentor to many over the span of her career. She had an incredible passion for music as well as sewing, gardening, and most of all spending time in the sun on Lake Sinclair where she lived for many years.  Becoming a grandmother 3 1/2 years ago filled her with an abundance of joy.  Karen devoted her entire life to helping, supporting, and caring for her family and friends; but more than anything else, she was a loving, kindhearted, and beautiful mother.

Left to cherish her memories are her devoted husband and best friend David; her children and their spouses: David Brent Speer and Timothy Roger Mays of Atlanta and Sara Beth Oren and Andrew Charles Oren of Arvada, CO; grandchildren: Kennedy Elizabeth Oren and Ryder Jackson Oren; siblings and their spouses: Michael and Bonnie McCluskey, Bruce and Lynn McFarland, and Terry and Jim Blakely; and nieces, nephews and friends too numerous to name.

A Celebration of Life Service for Karen will be announced once social distancing restrictions are lifted. Burial will be in the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton. A Celebration of Life Gathering honoring both David and Karen will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Contact Brent Speer for details concerning the Celebration of Life. Friends and family are welcome.

If desired, contributions in her memory may be made to Shriner’s Children Hospital, Processing Center, PO Box 863765, Orlando, FL 32886 or online at donate.lovetotherescue.org
