Mr. James Larry Gunter, 69, of Oak Street, Elberton, husband of 51 years to Elaine Johnson Gunter, finished his course in faith on Wednesday, February 4, 2015, at Elbert Memorial Hospital. Mr. Gunter was born in Elbert County on February 26, 1945, to the late James Howard "Zeke" and Mazelle Locke Gunter. He faithfully served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a member of Francis Asbury United Methodist Church, Philomathea Masonic Lodge #25, Elberton Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Elberton Moose Lodge. Larry was a very artistic man and used his talent throughout his entire life. He worked as a structural draftsman at Coggins Granite Company and as a painter for many years. Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Elaine Johnson Gunter, of the home; two sons: Mark Gunter and his wife Jennifer of The Dalles, Oregon and Van Gunter of Elberton; siblings: Carol Walters of Elberton and Dennis Gunter and his wife Velma of Hartwell; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Steve Gunter. The family is at the residence on Oak Street and will receive friends at Berry Funeral Home from 6:00-8:00p.m. on Saturday evening. Funeral services celebrating his life will be held on Sunday, February 8, at 2:30p.m. in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with the Rev. Al Butler officiating. Interment, with military honors, will follow in Elmhurst Cemetery. Scott Gunter, Phil Rice, Bob Johnson, Todd Gunter, James Walters, Mike Walters, and Robbie Johnson will serve as pallbearers. Earl Bonds, Jim Stansell, David Johnson, Raymond Jones, and Jimmy Webb will serve as honorary pallbearers. Flowers will be greatly appreciated by the family.
