Mr. Lawrence ‘Lamar’ Thompson, born in Elberton, Georgia on September 12, 1939, finished his course in faith at his residence in Elberton, Georgia on January 24, 2023. He was 83 years old.
A lifelong resident of Elberton, Lamar was the second of third children born to Hubert Clyde Thompson and Maxine Smith Thompson. He joins his parents; his two siblings: Clyde Thompson and Joan Almond; and son-in-law, J. Scott Smith, in Heaven.
Lamar was a 1958 graduate of Elberton High School. During school, he worked at Winn-Dixie and at the Elbert Theatre where he enjoyed throwing popcorn at moviegoers. Jacquelyn Beryl Dickerson caught his eye walking down the street and he told his friends, “I’m going to get a date with that girl!” Fate would have it that the two would be introduced to one another during a blind date, and they were happily married on May 29, 1959. Lamar and Jackie were later blessed with three daughters: Melanie, Angela, and Lori.
He served his country faithfully in the Georgia Army National Guard, retiring after 26 years of dedicated service. Lamar worked alongside his Dad using their God given talents of painting and being contractors; some of his proudest work opportunities including being able to work at the Elbert County Courthouse and at the University of Georgia.
Lamar was a member of Victory Baptist Church, and it is through his faith in God and the love and support of his family that he courageously fought cancer of 18 years. In his free time, he enjoyed deer hunting and fishing, especially trips to Santee Cooper Lake. He also enjoyed playing softball up until his 40s, and was a longtime member of the Elberton Lions Club.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Jacquelyn Beryl “Jackie” Dickerson Thompson; three daughters: Melanie Thompson, Angela and Jonathan Rice, and Lori Thompson, all of Elberton; grandchildren: Scottie and Jana Schultz. Tiffany and David Eckel, Jennifer and Neal Montgomery, Katie and Alex Acker, and Savannah and Walker Williams; numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 26, from 6:00-7:30p.m. at Berry Funeral Home. During other times, the family will be at the residence.
Funeral services celebrating Lamar’s life will be held on Friday, January 27, at 3:00p.m. in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with the Revs. Sean Baughman and Scottie Schultz officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memorial Park. Honored to serve as pallbearers are Jonathan Rice, Alex Acker, Walker Williams, Kody Kinstle, Corbin McCannon, David Eckel, Chuck Dawson, and Ronald Mooney.
Flowers are accepted and contributions may be made in his memory to T.J. & Friends Foundation, PO Box 6161, Elberton, GA 30635.
