Elberton, GA - Denver 'Lee' Rampey, Jr., 70, passed away Monday, April 2, 2012, at his home. Mr. Rampey was born April 4, 1941, in Elberton, GA to the late Denver Lee Rampey, Sr. and Ruby Blackmon Rampey. He had recently retired as general counsel for Southeastern Power Administration in Elberton, where for 31 years he took great pride in his work. For 40 years, Mr. Rampey provided his legal expertise for the United States Federal Government. He graduated from Elbert County High School in 1959 and was a member of the 1956 Blue Devil Region Championship Team. Mr. Rampey received his undergraduate degree from Emory University and attended the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University where he received his Bachelor of Law in 1968. He served as both the U.S. Attorney and Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia, practiced law with the late Peyton S. Hawes, Sr. of Elberton, and was a partner with Nunn, Geiger & Rampey in Warner Robins and Perry, Georgia. Mr. Rampey was an avid cattleman at the family farm in Elberton for more than 35 years, where he spent many evenings and weekends aboard his tractor. He was very proud of his service to the United States Marine Corps from 1962 to 1965 as an Artillery, Embarkation and Intelligence Officer. Mr. Rampey was a passionate observer of current events, especially those relating to politics. He enjoyed traveling with his family, and took great pleasure in planning trips and excursions that resulted in many wonderful adventures. His grandchildren were his greatest source of joy, and he marveled as each reached the special milestones of life. He was a kind and loving man who did not know many strangers. Mr. Rampey is survived by Irene Marlow of Bowman, to whom he was devoted for 25 years. He deeply loved his three daughters and son who include Jennifer Paire (Chris) of Canton, GA, Melissa Collins (Jason) of Hull, GA, Melanie Travis (Jeff) of Charleston, TN, and Jason Marlow (Andrea) of Elberton, GA. His beloved grandchildren include Mallory Baston of Athens, GA, Ashley Albright of Linwood, NJ, Alex Marlow of Elberton, GA, Cole Collins and Clint Barksdale of Hull, GA, Brady and Lucy Paire of Canton, GA, and Ryann Travis of Charleston, TN. He is also survived by Judy Rampey of Charleston, TN. Funeral services celebrating his life will be held at 2:30PM Saturday, April 7, in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Purvis and the Rev. Bill Hayes officiating. Interment will follow in Elmhurst Cemetery. The Rampey family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8PM Friday evening.
