Mr. Lewis Howard Smith, 85, of Washington Highway, Elberton, husband of the late Faye Kidd Smith, finished his course in faith on Thursday, September 1, 2016, at Gentiva Hospice at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Smith was born in Elbert County on April 10, 1931, son of the late Otis Howard Smith and Vera Claire Fortson Smith. He was a member of Eliam United Methodist Church and a retired polisher in the granite industry. “Papa” loved spending time with his family.
Left to cherish his memories are his daughters: Jo and Bobby Banister of Hartwell, Janine and Keith Scarborough of Elberton, and Angela Johnson of Elberton; brothers: Marvin and Kathryn Smith of Elberton and Wayne and Maxine Smith of Elberton; grandchildren: Joey Chatham, Sherri and Jake Fleming, Jayson Chatham, Heather and Brian Blanford, Ande Johnson and Clint Gunter, and Benne Johnson; six great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by his daughter and son-in-law: Joy and Wimp Cochran; and son-in-law, Terry “TJ” Johnson.
Memorial services celebrating his life will be held on Monday, September 5, at 4 o’clock at Eliam United Methodist Church with the Rev. Emily Case officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Inurnment will be in Elmhurst Cemetery.
The family is at the residence on Washington Highway.
