Luther "Babe" Howard Benton

Mr. Luther Howard “Babe” Benton, age 72, of Carlton, passed away on Thursday, January 28, 2010 at Athens Regional Medical Center. Born on March 23, 1937 in Elbert County, he was a son of the late Roy Charlie and George Will McClain Benton. Mr. Benton retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years of service and he was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Janice Marilyn Scoggins Benton. Survivors include his daughters, Leslie Benton and Lisa Sorrow; son, Daniel William Benton; brother and sister-in-law, Billy Joe and Martha Benton; sisters, Jean Cooper and Betty Guest; grandchildren, Andy Benton, Tara McElhannon, and Tyler Benton; and great-granddaughter, Joanna McElhannon, all of Carlton. Many other relatives and friends also survive. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, January 31, 2010, at 3PM from the Chapel of Hicks Funeral Home with Rev. John Guest and Rev. Douglas Huff officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Glade Cemetery of Carlton. The family will be at the home of Jean Cooper and will receive friends from 4-6PM Saturday evening at Hicks Funeral Home. Hicks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements for Mr. Luther Howard “Babe” Benton.
