Mrs. Mae Belle Scott Cryder, age 108, of Elberton, entered into rest on Wednesday, August 15, 2018, at Nancy Hart Nursing Center while surrounded by her family.
A daughter of the late John and Ruth Irene Wright Scott, Mrs. Cryder was born on December 4, 1909, at the home of her grandparents in rural Lincoln County. She moved to Elberton at the age of 18 to work in the silk mill and met her husband of 62 years, Royal Glenn Cryder who preceded her in death in 1994. They raised their family in a beautiful home on Elbert Street where she could often be seen tending her flowers. Mae Belle was a fixture in Elberton, especially at Ward’s Pharmacy where she worked as a clerk for over forty years, retiring at age 101. She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church as long as her health permitted.
She is survived by her children: Joyce and Rod Cooksey of Chicago, Ill and Terry and Lisa Cryder of Douglasville; daughters-in-law, Jean Cryder of Elberton and Barbara Cryder of Conyers; eleven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The last surviving member of her immediate family, she is preceded in death by her parents; husband; sons: Haynes Cryder and Jerry Cryder; and siblings: Olivia Smalley, Hazel Craft, Beatrice Higgins, Norma Ruth Sims, Jenida McGill, Felton Scott, Frank Scott, and Douglas Scott.
Funeral services celebrating her life will be held on Sunday, August 19, at 3 o’clock in the First Baptist Church of Elberton with the Rev. Steve Fenlon and the Rev. Raymond Scott officiating. Interment will follow in Elmhurst Cemetery.
The family is at their respective homes and will greet friends for one hour prior to the service in the church fellowship hall.
Contributions may be made in her memory to First Baptist Church of Elberton, 132 Heard Street, Elberton, GA 30635, Midway United Methodist Church, 2543 Midway Church Road, Lincolnton, GA 30817, or to the charity of one’s choice.
