Mr. Marcus P. Bridges, 87, of Elberton, Georgia passed away Friday, January 10, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family. Mr. Bridges was born in Oglethorpe County to the late John Pope and Camilla Pass Bridges.He celebrated over 10 years of marriage to his bride, Hazel Hopkins Bridges, whom he often referred to as “my princess---the love of my life.”Mr. Bridges owned and operated a grocery and general merchandise store in Oglethorpe County for over 25 years.He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, having served in World War II as a Buck Sergeant.Throughout his life, Mr. Bridges served in leadership positions in several civic organizations including Oglethorpe County Farm Bureau, Oglethorpe County Civic Club, and the A.S.C.S Committee.Mr. Bridges was a devoted Christian,and was a faithful member of Doves Creek Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. In addition to his wife, Hazel,Mr. Bridges is survived by a son, Alan Bridges and his wife, Maryel;five stepchildren: Paula Collier, Jennifer Leong, Angelia Leong, Lisa McWilliams, and Eric Leong;five grandchildren;and one great-grandchild.Mr. Bridges also leaves behind a sister, Jimmie Blackmon Newton, of Elberton.Mr. Bridges was preceded in death by two daughters, Lee Turner and Jamie Seymour. A service to celebrate Mr. Bridges’ life was held Sunday, January 12, 2014at 3:00 p.m. at Doves Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Douglas Huff officiating.Visitation for family and friends was at the church at 2:00 p.m. just prior to the service.Interment followed at Forest Hills Memorial Park.
