Mrs. Margaret Ellen Childs Oakley, 92, of Brad Dixon Road, Elberton, wife of 55 years to the late Cecil Odell Oakley, Sr., passed away on Saturday, September 12, 2020, at Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Oakley was born in Elbert County on December 4, 1927, daughter of the late William Edgar Childs, Sr. and Fannie Mae Scott Childs. She was a homemaker and a faithful member of Woodlawn United Methodist Church where she served as Sunday school Teacher and church treasurer for 30 years. Mrs. Oakley was a well-known baby sitter who touched the lives of generations. She was an avid gardener and a member of Pine Tree Garden Club.
Margaret was blessed with three children: Priscilla O. Madden, wife of Henry Madden, the late Patricia O. Howell, wife of Lonnie Howell, and Cecil O. Oakley, Jr., husband of Haley Oakley. She was the proud “Granny” of Michael Madden, Michele Hall, Jody Howell, Julie Wheeler, Kyle Oakley, Katie Buresh, Kellie Oakley, and Kaycie Oakley; and fourteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings: Jeweldine Childs Chambers; brother, Thomas Banks Childs; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, husband, and daughter, she is preceded in death by her siblings: William Edgar Childs, Jr. and Essie Mae Childs.
Funeral services celebrating her life will be held on Monday, September 14, 2020, at 4 o’clock from the Woodlawn United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Moore officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Michael Madden, Jody Howell, Kyle Oakley, Russell Hall, Robert Wheeler, Sean Buresh, and Monty Dixon honored as pallbearers.
The family is at the residence of Henry and Priscilla Madden and will receive friends at Woodlawn United Methodist Church from 3:00-3:45p.m. on Monday prior to the service.
Flowers are accepted and contributions may be made in her memory to Woodlawn United Methodist Church Building Fund.
