Miss Marion Hamm Thornton, age 97, of Magnolia Estates, Elberton, Georgia and formerly of Sandy Springs, Georgia, died on Saturday, January 10, 2015, at Rainey Hospice House in Anderson, South Carolina. A native of Elberton, Georgia, Miss Thornton was the daughter of the late Lucius Marion “L.M.” Thornton and Hallie Hamm Thornton. She moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1941 where she retired from L&N Railroad following a 28-year career. She was a member of the Railroad Business Women and also a member of Zeta Beta Chi. Miss Thornton joined First Baptist Church of Atlanta in 1941 and remained a member until her death. She was very active in the Pastoral Care Department after retirement, and enjoyed assisting with Meals on Wheels. She was also a member of the Elbert County Historical Society. Miss Thornton is preceded in death by her parents and her sister and brother-in-law, Augusta Thornton Noble and Flynt Noble. She is survived by several cousins and many friends, including Charles and Nancy Hill of Elberton, Georgia, Mrs. Richard (Pearl) Fowler of Crawfordville, Georgia, and Dicky Fowler and family of Thomson, Georgia. Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 12, at 2:00p.m. in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with Dr. Scott Downing officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot of Elmhurst Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1:00p.m. until time for the service on Monday afternoon.
