Marion Holman Haley

Marion Holman Haley, 102, of Elberton, died May 8, 2019. He was the son of the late Ira Sereno and Minnie Gaines Haley.

Born and reared in Hart County, he served honorably as a bombardier in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, completing over 50 missions. After the war he spent most of his working life and raised his family in Tulsa, Oklahoma, moved back to Georgia after retirement, and enjoyed 30 years of living and boating on the lake in Hartwell. He was an active member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church and a charter member of the Hart County Golden K. With the Golden K he helped build hundreds of home access ramps for those in need. He was also an accomplished woodworker and gardener and learned to throw pots after he retired.

He was preceded in death by his parents, six of his siblings, and his first two wives, Gloria and Pauline. Survivors include his wife, Sara Rucker Vincent Haley of Elberton; his daughter and son-in-law, Judith and Gary Rutkin of Washington, D.C.; his son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Chris Haley of Gulf Shores, Alabama; stepdaughter Robyn Keeler and her husband, Rev. John Keeler of Elberton; stepson Hal Vincent of Richmond, Virginia; grandchildren Eve Birge (Paul) of Walnut Creek, California; Colin MacKie (Allison) of Walnut Creek, California; Thomas Haley of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Mark Haley of Gulf Shores, Alabama; step-grandson Owen Keeler (Tara) of Arnoldsville, Georgia; a great-granddaughter, five step-great-grandchildren and two step-great-great grandchildren; sisters Mary Haley Rathbun of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Margaret Haley Ward of Elberton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

His family and friends were blessed by his friendliness, kindness, generosity, and grateful heart. They will miss him, but they are thankful for his long life well-lived.

The funeral will be at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church on Saturday, May 11, at 2:00 p.m. Burial with military honors will follow at New Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mr. Haley’s memory to the Hart County Golden K, P.O. Box 832, Hartwell, GA 30643.
