Mrs. Martha Evelyn Stratton Hunt, wife of the late Ralph Leonard Hunt, entered into rest in the comfort of her home on Monday, March 27, 2023, at the age of 91.
Martha was born at home in the Rock Branch Community of Elbert County on December 22, 1931, the eldest child and only daughter of the late Leonard Mashburn Stratton and Lena Beatrice McMullan. She graduated from Rock Branch High School and was a life long member of Rock Branch Baptist Church, where she was the oldest member and a member of the WMU. For a brief time, she and Ralph attended Northside Baptist Church.
Martha was the operator of Kewin Clothing Store, and later co-owned Marjoy Dress Shop on the Elberton Square. She worked at American Bank as a teller and ultimately retired from Granite City Bank where she worked as a teller and in the public relations department. Martha also enjoyed her time working at the Elbert County Magistrate’s Office.
She enjoyed fishing and working in her yard, which consisted of constant flower planting and vegetable gardening. Martha was proud of the home she and Ralph built on Crestview Drive, and took great pride in keeping it clean and decorated for every occasion. She loved shopping trips, especially browsing the shelves of Belk, Hamrick’s, and Home Goods. She enjoyed the relationships she built over the years with her family and many friends, and looked forward to keeping in touch with everyone via telephone or coffee at McIntosh Coffee Shop. “Martha’s News Network”, better known as “MNN”, was sure to keep everyone up-to-date on the happenings of the world, and will be greatly missed. She was an animal lover who raised miniature eskimo spitz for many years as well as several different breeds of birds.
Her strong-willed demeanor and caring, loving nature will be remembered for years to come.
In addition to her parents, Martha is preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Leonard Hunt; special friend, William Vernon Maxwell; and brothers-in-law: Joe Hunt and Ben Hunt.
She leaves behind her devoted son, David Keith Hunt and his wife Barbara of Elberton; brother, Edwin Stratton and his wife Linda of Elberton; beloved grandchildren: Bradley J. Bowen of Tucker, Chief Master Sergeant Russell Keith Hunt, USAF (Ret.) and his wife Bridgett of Byron, and Brandon L. Bowen and his wife Cara of Elberton; great-grandchildren: Kamron Standring, Kohen Standring, Lila Bowen, Letty Bowen, and Lynlee Bowen; and sisters-in-law, Micheline Hunt of Nice, France and Betty Hunt of North Carolina.
The family is at the home of David and Barbara Hunt, 527 Woodland Road, Elberton, and will receive friends on Thursday, March 30, from 5:00-7:00p.m. at Berry Funeral Home.
Funeral services celebrating Martha’s life will be held on Friday, March 31, at 2:00 p.m. in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with the Revs. Gary Purvis and Tim Adams officiating. Graveside services will follow in the Cemetery at Rock Branch Baptist Church.
Flowers are accepted and contributions may be made in her memory to the Elbert County Humane Society, PO Box 267, Elberton, GA 30635.
